Agenda

Photoshop Workshop: Beginner to Intermediate

Duration: 3 hours

1. Cropping and Resizing

Learn how to crop images to improve composition, remove distracting elements around the edges, and create images suited to different print sizes and digital formats. Understand the difference between resizing an image and changing its resolution, and explore how aspect ratios affect the final result.

2. Basic Retouching Using the Spot Healing Brush

Discover how to remove sensor dust, small blemishes, unwanted spots, and other minor distractions using the Spot Healing Brush. Learn how Photoshop blends the surrounding pixels to produce natural-looking results, and explore best practices for retouching without damaging the original image.

3. Simple Colour Adjustments

Explore basic techniques for improving the colour and overall appearance of an image. Learn how to adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, and colour balance to achieve a more natural or creative result. Understand how to make subtle adjustments that enhance an image without making it look overprocessed.

4. Layer Masks

Understand one of Photoshop’s most powerful editing tools: the layer mask. Learn how to selectively reveal or conceal parts of a layer without permanently deleting pixels. Explore the use of black, white, and shades of grey on a mask, and practise blending two images or selectively applying an adjustment to specific areas of a photograph.

5. Precise Selections

Learn how to isolate specific objects or areas of an image for targeted editing. Explore selection tools such as the Object Selection Tool, Quick Selection Tool, and Lasso Tool, along with techniques for refining selection edges. Understand how precise selections can help you edit skies, foregrounds, individual objects, and other parts of an image independently.

6. Adjustment Layers

Discover how to make flexible, non-destructive edits using adjustment layers. Explore commonly used adjustments such as Levels, Curves, Hue/Saturation, and Color Balance. Learn how to modify, fine-tune, reorder, and combine adjustments, and how to use layer masks to control exactly where each adjustment affects the image.

7. Content-Aware Fill

Learn how Photoshop can intelligently replace unwanted objects and fill selected areas using surrounding image information. Explore practical applications such as removing distracting objects, cleaning up backgrounds, and extending image areas. Discuss how to make selections that produce better results and how to refine the outcome when the automatic fill is not perfect.

Meet Your Instructors: Larry Biancolin

Based in Kingston, Ontario, I am a dedicated landscape photographer with a passion for the great outdoors and the physical challenge of the trail. I travel extensively and often to remote locations, often hiking through rugged terrain to capture epic views during the fleeting light of sunrise and sunset.

A long-time member of the Mississauga Camera Club, I have always had a natural predisposition to teach. I actively seek opportunities to share my knowledge and photography exploration with local and remote camera clubs—a true labor of love. In my presentations, I mix the secrets of finding and reaching remote, epic views with the technical and artistic aspects of the craft. I attribute this curiosity and love for exploration to my early adoption of new technologies, as I am always seeking better ways to capture and present the world.

My journey with post-processing began as an early adopter of Photoshop 2 in 1991; today, I utilize a refined workflow that balances the power of Adobe Photoshop with the efficiency of Adobe Lightroom. I shoot exclusively in RAW format to maximize dynamic range and minimize file compression.

In recent years, I have added drone photography to my toolkit. This aerial perspective brings about a whole new range of possibilities along with unique technical challenges. My toolkit also includes specialized software designed to reduce noise, eliminate blur, and enhance resolution, allowing me to translate the raw beauty of the wilderness into polished, professional art.

You can find a selection of my work at LarryBiancolin.com.

I look forward to seeing you there.
